We've produced some great info about choices after Year 11:

Choose your Own Path 2009

Your options for next year

Everyone is going to have different ideas about what they want to do after Year 11.

Whatever you're considering, making that choice will be much easier if you know the main points to be aware of.

Your options for next year fall into three main areas:

  • Continue in full-time education at college or sixth form
  • Follow a work-based learning route such as an Apprenticeship
  • Go into employment

How do I know what's right for me?

With all this freedom to choose what to do next it can seem a bit daunting initially, but the first thing to say is don't worry! Nobody expects you to have your whole future planned out right now.

  • Think about what matters to you - job satisfaction, salary, doing something practical?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 year's time?

Take up your September Guarantee

The good news is that when you leave Year 11, you will be guaranteed an offer of learning or training at sixth form, FE college or with a training provider, by the end of September.

This is called the September Guarantee.

The learning offer should meet your individual needs. So it will have to take account of the qualifications you have, be somewhere that you can travel to, and the sort of learning that you want to do.

Don't forget there is support available from parents/carers, teachers, youth workers, friends and your Connexions PA - they can all help you if you need it.

Made up your mind?

That's great, but remember there's no such thing as a job for life any more, and changing career is now very common. Being flexible and able to adapt to new situations is as just as important as having specific skills.

Still not sure?

Then at this stage it is important to you keep your options open.
