The Buzz:
Looking at the poster for this film, it doesn’t give much away at all, does it? A big, beautiful blue face, with yellow eyes, and the word AVATAR beside it. Frankly, it mesmerised me. With good reason too!
It is the year 2154, and another Earth-like planet has been discovered, called Pandora. Its home to an extraordinary new race, called the Na’vi (the big, blue people).
In order to find out more about them, the American Army (naturally!) has created these things called “Avatars” – human-Na’vi hybrids. Oh, and the Army want to get their hands on the unobtanium that is under the Na’vi’s sacred tree.
This is where Jake Sully (Terminator: Salvation’s Sam Worthington) comes in. He’s a paraplegic ex-marine, who is hired to have an Avatar (to replace his dead, twin brother), who lives while he stays in the machine that controls it.
Still following? In Pandora, he meets the beautiful Neytiri (Star Trek’s Zoe Saldana) who teaches him the ways of her race.
I was utterly spellbound by the 3D special effects of Avatar. Not only is the scenery bright and beautiful, but you can easily believe it is all real! I loved the fantastic creatures of Pandora, especially the horses. The “link” created between the animals and the Na’vi is ingenious!!! At the start of the film, you believe that they are the ruthless killers, but at the end maybe that is not the case?
In conclusion, it’s a film for all ages, even though it’s a bit on the long side. But it’s worth getting a numb bum over!
The Rating:
I give this film 5 STARS
