The Buzz:

Based on the colourful imagination and book by Dr Seuss, it tells the story of an elephant called Horton (Jim Carrey), who lives in the Jungle of Nool.

On the fifteenth of May, he discovers a tiny speck that talks to him, which he rescues so that it lands on a clover. He also realises the speck is actually a tiny planet, that inhabits a city called “Whoville” in which a miniscule race of people called the “Who’s” live.

Even though he cannot see them, Horton soon becomes friends with the town’s Mayor (Jim Carell) – who has 96 daughters but only one son called Jojo, who won’t speak - using a kind of megaphone to communicate with him.

Horton vows to protect the Who’s from harm, because their world is incredibly small and could easily be destroyed by the bigger world around it.

Of course, word gets round that Horton the elephant has been talking to a clover, and the Sour Kangaroo (Carol Burnett) believes she has to destroy it, because he is a “bad influence” to the children. Horton is adamant and will not give the clover to her, so she decides to get “help” from the evil vulture, Vlad Vladikoff (Will Arnett) who almost succeeds.

As I expected, this film explodes with outrageous colour and weird-looking animals, in fact the only normal one appears to be Horton, and even then you can assume he is made from rubber, from the sounds used for him. I found it quite amusing that Jojo had the fashion sense of a “Goth”; this is cleverly put in, because he doesn’t speak much and looked miserable in nearly the whole film.

The Rating:

I give this film 4 STARS
