The Buzz:
Brad and Kate (Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon), a happily unmarried couple, enjoy nothing more than spending Christmas Day with just each other; this is fair enough, but they really just want to stay away from both their divorced parents and mad families…
However, THIS year seems to be a little different. Not only does their flight get cancelled because of bad weather conditions, but they are caught red-handed, all dressed in typical holiday gear (think tropical-print shirts and pineapples) LIVE ON THE NEWS for everyone to see.
Therefore, they have no choice but to reluctantly spend Christmas with their families – in just ONE day.
Doesn’t seem that realistic does it? Having four families to go to in 24 hours? But believe me, it gets worse…
You may find yourself laughing out loud at all the ridiculous slapstick slotted in, or just squirming and wincing at how painful it is, to watch all of those so-called “gags” taken completely to the extreme. Like me, you may think they are unnecessary and the cheerful Christmas message may be mentioned occasionally (the Nativity of course, yet even THAT is twisted into something over-the-top and stupid), but otherwise it is just ignored; the film is too mature for its certificate as even I had difficulty following the true meaning of the film, while it is only a 12A.
Was it something about being true and honest to your families…? Who knows!
In fact, probably the only thing I enjoyed most about it was the trailer for “Twilight”, which was WAY before the film even began – yes, I thought it was that awful.
The Rating:
I give this film 2 STARS
