The Buzz:
The big, red satanic ape is back, except this time the tale begins with a bedtime story on Christmas Day in 1955…
A long time ago, a huge battle reined between humans and all mythical creatures. The elf King, Balor, constructed a golden army of clockwork soldiers, known as the “Golden Army”. After a truce was formed (humans would keep their cities, the elves would keep their forests), the King’s son, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) went off in a huff because he did not agree with it. The Golden Army are put to sleep.
Back in the present, and the elf prince decides to declare war on the human race, searching in vain for the pieces of crown that allow him to reawaken the Army, resulting in killing his father for a piece. His twin sister, Princess Nuala (Anna Watson) goes into hiding from him, seeing as she owns the last part.
Meanwhile, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) is having relationship issues with his girlfriend, Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) who has the ability to conjure fire. However, it is Abe Sapian (Doug Jones) who discovers her secret – a live changing secret at that!
For those who haven’t seen the first film (shame on you if you haven’t – it’s worth seeing as well!), Tom Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) is the FBI agent who must “look after” Hellboy, despite the fact they are not exactly the best of buddies, therefore, he assigns Johann Krauss (Seth McFarlane) to take over – expect some amusing scenes between him and Hellboy!
I was spellbound by this film, for the effects and for the plot, not to mention a particular scene involving alcohol and a cheesy love song! I identified Guillermo del Toro’s style of monster and there are plenty of those.
However, I found Luke Goss’s performance slightly irritating at times – maybe it had something to do with his voice sounding like he had a cold?!
The Rating:
I give this film 5 STARS
