The Buzz:
Based on the memoirs of the British author, Toby Young (who also happens to be one of the film’s writers, but that’s obvious I suppose), about his struggle in New York, shortly after being given a job in Sharps Magazine.
Sean Pegg plays the character of Sidney Young (based on the writer), the small-time journalist who has suddenly been dropped into the overwhelming picture of New York, thanks to magazine editor, Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges). Almost as soon as Sydney walks through the door, his new boss warns him to try and get on the good side of everyone at his new workplace – unless he wants to fail dismally and get fired, so there wasn’t much pressure on him...I DON’T think!
Things don’t start well, but Sydney eventually manages to befriend (before annoying and insulting of course) workmate Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst). In fact, he irritates everyone else SO much; she appears to be the only person keeping his career alive, despite him being immediately attracted to sexy Hollywood actress, Sophie Maes (Megan Fox).
This film deserves at least SOME polite applause, however it is easy to see why it is a 15, what with some graphic nudity, some drug use, and of course plenty of swearing (to be expected if Sean Pegg is involved); which I’m sure many of you may find offensive.
Sydney Young is seen as an extremely innocent character to the point of stupidity. Yet, you cannot help but laugh out loud at some of the embarrassing, EXCRUCIATINGLY painful predicaments he gets himself into, you find yourself gnawing your lip in utmost sympathy for him, as well as chuckling.
