Free Time: Movie Review

Quantum of Solace by Benjamin Donne

I always thought that a sequel is something that has to match it if not top the original film. A perfect example would have to be the Dark Knight. I went to see the new James bond apprehensively, I personally was a fan on Casino Royal, and would love to see the new one do better than it.

The one thing I found disappointing about the film is that the structure was, for me… very simple. It carried on from the first film, but barely adding anything to it, for example, in The Dark Knight Nolan adds characters and lets us explore them. I can’t help but think that we already know what kind of guy Bond is – a violent 00 agent who is driven by revenge. Something I was looking forward to in this film was digging deeper into his personality – seeing what really makes him tick, but all I saw was Bond, exactly the same as I did in the first one. Secondly, in a previous review on Casino Royal I wrote about how Bonds in the past have lacked real violence and action – but I now think that purely is its problem, I feel that Quantum of Solace has lost out on its ‘family value’. And from that angle I feel that it has lost the bond side of things, no longer does he have the traditional trademarks. The films have lost a lot of the atmosphere with previous films (Casino Royal included) had in abundance, it is no longer about the gadgets, which is something that I always loved.

Similar to the first film, this one starts off with a bang, bringing in high speed tacking shots and quick snappy cuts. The starting scene is essential to this film because it gets the adrenaline pumping into your body, which helps you keep focus when the film dives into the storyline, but there was only problem with this film - The lack of storyline. In my opinion, they could easily include this film on the end Casino Royal. There isn’t any individuality about the film, it reminds me heavily of the Bourne series. In previous Bond films there is a new exciting mission awaiting him, but this film’s lacks just that. Maybe the director wanted this, but I feel that the film has steered away from the Bond series, and gone more towards the action side of things. The angle in which I feel the director was working towards was the revenge side of things, but this time, I’m afraid it just doesn’t work for me. Action film? Yes. Bond film? Sorry, No.

Special thanks: Mr Wheatley
