The Buzz:

A good old English film, based on the novel written by Neil Gaiman, set in the fictional town of Wall – it even has its own wall! A young man named Tristan is searching for the perfect present for the hard-to-please love of his life, Victoria (Sienna Miller). The King (Peter O’Toole) of Stormhold – the mysterious world that lies on the other side of the wall - is dying and the last of his offspring – Septimus, Primus, Tertius and Secundus – and his other three dead sons – Quartus, Quintus and Sextus – are surrounding him. David Walliams and Rupert Everett star as two of them.

Everett is killed with a squashed face and Walliams is burnt and scorched. Whoever gets the King’s diamond-turned-ruby necklace will become the next ruler of Stormhold. The flying necklace knocks out a star and Tristan discovers it – but the star is actually a beautiful woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). However, word gets out to three, old n’ ugly witches and Larnia (Michelle Pfeiffer) the eldest, sets out to find her, capture her and eat her heart so they will be beautiful again! So Tristan and Yvaine’s perilous journey begin, meeting a few stars on the way, including Robert Di Nero as Captain Shakespeare, supposedly a tough masculine pirate who collects lightning for money, when he is REALLY a cross dresser and bit of a "whoopsi” as one of his crew point out after a truly cringe worthy scene when he comes face-to-face with one of the Princes - when he is spotted wearing a pink dress! Not only that, we also see Ricky Gervais as a sleazy salesman – he might as well be playing himself in this role, except when Larnia causes him to sound like an annoying seagull, which to be honest, was an improvement to the real Gervais.

The ending to this thrilling film is the icing to the mouth-watering cake, with plenty of shattering glass and a dead Prince - controlled by a voodoo doll by Larnia - duelling with Tristan. However, some of you may find that having a wall leading to a mystical world a little hard to believe and you also may not feel satisfied with such an obvious way to conclude such a Goody VS Baddy film.

The Rating:

I give this film 4 STARS
