The Buzz:

After seeing the advert to St Trinian’s for the first time at some point at the cinema, I was curious about it – would it be any good? My answer? Yes. St Trinian’s is a boarding school for young ladies – but the young ladies are FAR from well-behaved! Flash Harry (Russell Brand) is the dodgy dealer, who has the job of selling the vodka the girls produce – which is ALSO as dodgy as the man himself. There is a new girl in town, Annabelle (Talulah Riley) with her selfish, snooty father, Carnaby Fritton (Rupert Everett). Almost immediately, you realise Everett also plays Annabelle’s auntie and St Trinian’s Headmistress, Miss Fritton. It is quite disturbing as he plays this particular role so incredibly well! At first, Annabelle is the outsider of the group, but with a little help from Kelly (Gemma Arteton) - the leader of the gang – and a successful makeover, she soon fits in. Colin Firth is the fictional Minister for Education, Geoffrey Thwaites; he is determined to close down St Trinian’s after discovering not only is it a terrible school, but it is also soon to become bankrupt.

There are plenty of laughs to be had here because it soon becomes clear he and Miss Fritton once had a “thing” at college – watch out for her pink tracksuit! Expect to hear the cheesy pop song “Love is in the air” every time these two characters are together! However, it seems Miss Fritton not the only one with feelings for Geoffrey – her dog; Mr Darcy soon takes a fancy to his leg, sadly, Mr Darcy meets a nasty end, while Geoffrey has a whole camera crew with him! Mr Thwaites also has a snooty daughter, Verity (Lucy Punch) who bullied Annabelle when she was at her school. Both schools play against each other in an incredibly competitive hockey match with plenty of sneaky “tactics” along the way. St Trinian’s are facing bankruptcy, so in order to gain more money, they decide to plan a heist – to steal the famous “Girl with the pearl earring” painting from the National Art Gallery in Trafalgar Square. To do this, they take part in a TV School Challenge with Stephen Fry as the show’s host, using three of the not-so-intelligent girls of St Trinian’s, Peaches, Chloe and Chelsea (Amara Karan, Antonia Bernath and Tamsin Egerton) as the contestants, while the answers to the questions are being fed to them by earpiece. Meanwhile, Kelly, the Twins and worst enemies Taylor (Kathryn Drysdale) and freaky Anoushka (Tereza Srbova) have to get past the security alarms and lasers – Mission Impossible style! It’s up to Annabelle to distract Verity from stopping their devious plan in its tracks, and what better way than knocking her out with a hockey stick and make-shift puck?

The only problem with this film is that you may find the tender moments between Rupert Everett and Colin Firth quite nauseating at times, especially at the end of the film when they apparently kiss. Not only that, those who are not a fan of Russell Brand, may cringe after the puzzling moment between Carnaby Fritton and Flash Harry, pretending to be a famous artist and attempting to persuade Annabelle’s father to buy the “Girl with the pearl earring”.

Rupert got the inspiration for Miss Fritton using Camilla Parker Bowles as an image!
