The Buzz:

Any die-hard Marvel comics fan will immediately prick up their ears at the mere mention of this film’s title, but sadly, it isn’t as strictly based on the comic as the last three Xmen films…

It begins in the year 1845 in Canada, a young boy called James witnesses his father being killed by their groundskeeper Thomas Logan. In a crazed fit of rage and anguish, the boy’s hands produce claws of bone. James flees, accompanied by a young Victor Creed, and they both agree to look out for each other always.

Centuries pass by and they are fully grown, played by Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber; apparently they don’t get old because of their ability to heal, but that doesn’t get explained very well, so I was quite confused!

They have fought in every single American war (think Vietnam and World War One and Two), in a clever way to express their animal sides. However Logan…or James…or Jimmy…or something, is weary of fighting, while Victor is just plain violent – and runs weird – and ends up killing one of his superiors.

As punishment, they are shot, but of course they survive, before being approached by William Stryker (Danny Huston – NOT Brian Cox as in the second Xmen!). He offers them membership in Team X (not a very imaginative title, you might say). There, Logan and Victor meet John Wraith (hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, Will.i.am), Bradley (Dominic Monaghan – he plays Merry in Lord of the Rings) and three other mutants. They all investigate a meteorite in Africa, but Logan has had enough so leaves…

Six years later, he is working as a lumberjack and has a girlfriend called Kayla (Lyn Collins). However, it isn’t long before Stryker has caught up with him again, warning him that a member of the X Team is killing off the others.

Mmm…I wonder who it could be.

So, in order to protect himself, Logan agrees to be part of one of Stryker’s mad experiments. Y’see, that worthless piece of meteorite before is actually made up of some REALLY strong metal that I can’t pronounce. Therefore, Logan gets it injected into him, so those claws of bone of his are all shiny n’ hard.

I liked how a few characters from the Xmen films were mentioned in this one, such as a young adolescent Scott Summers, who is Cyclops, as well as the witty remarks made by Victor Creed, “Ooh, shiny”. It still makes me laugh four days on.

But do Creed and Logan REALLY have to have a bust-up three times???

The Rating:

I give this film 4 STARS
