If you are under 19, contact or visit your local centre to find out details of jobs and apprenticeships, or look at the vacancies on this website.

Connexions Recruitment Advisers (RAs) will help you with advice on all aspects of your job searching, including applications, CVs and interview skills.

Here are documents provided by Connexions to help you in finding a job:

Job Centre/Jobcentre Plus

If you are over 18 you can visit your local job centre or check out their website:

Jobseekers: Direct Gov

If you are under 18 you will have to register with the Youth and Connexions Service first.

Even if you don't find a job first time, keep visiting. New types of jobs come up every day.

Jobseeker Direct

If don't want to go down to your local job centre then you could call Jobseeker Direct to find out about jobs in your area.

Employment agencies

Employment agencies/recruitment agencies deal with permanent and temporary vacancies although some will require you to be 18+ years old.

A job that starts out as temporary may well become permanent and even if it doesn't, you will have gained useful work experience and earned some money in the process!

Newspapers

Check the local newspapers because on certain days they have big vacancy sections. It will give you a good idea of the type of work that is available in your area.

People you know

Friends, relatives and people you have previously worked for can be particularly helpful. Let them know you are looking for work and the type of job you hope to find.

Magazines - trade and special interest

Vacancies for certain jobs appear in specialised magazines, which may be available in your local reference library or to buy in newsagents. They often have careers supplements about how to find work in that industry.

Contacting employers direct

You may find it useful to contact firms that you would like to work for. Send them a short letter (perhaps including a CV) to ask whether they have any vacancies or anticipate any in the future. Yellow Pages and local directories of employers can be helpful.

Look online

Many companies and big organisations, like councils and hospitals, advertise vacancies on their websites. There are also a lot of websites offering job vacancies.
