Education 'n' Work

Making your choices

There is one thing that will make this whole decision making process much easier, and that is getting yourself organised!

Use this checklist to make sure that you're ready to make your option choices. It's a good way to double check that you've not forgotten to do anything:

  • I have read the information from school about options.
  • I understand what subjects I have to do to at my school.
  • I know what optional subjects are available at my school.
  • I have thought about the subjects that I like and would be good at.
  • I have picked a second choice in case there is a timetable clash.
  • I know how much coursework will be involved in the subjects that I like.
  • I have used the careers/Connexions library or the Internet to find out more information about my career ideas.

You should also have a one-to-one meeting with your form tutor during this year to help decide on your subject choices, and discuss any career plans. The results may be recorded in your Individual Learning Plan (ILP). You can use it to check that you are on track to achieve your subject and career goals.

Do's and Don'ts

Think carefully about why you want to take a subject. It must be right for you and not just because you like the teacher, or to be with your mates!

Take time to look into different types of careers and the qualifications you will need.

Don't panic , there are few choices you can make now that will prevent you from following a particular career when you leave school!
