The Mix: a place for young people to go

Young people in Suffolk have played the lead role in securing £4,750,000 for the XCHANGE project to deliver a world class centre in Stowmarket.

The new facility will be called "The Mix", located at 127 Ipswich Street, Stowmarket, and will offer services and activities for young people aged 13 and 19 (up to 25 with additional needs).

Hopefully the Mix will be up and running by June 2012.

How did all this happen?

The Myplace programme, part of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), awarded Suffolk County Council the money to fund the project.

Earlier, young people from the XCHANGE Project Planning Group had discussed ideas about what they would like to have in place if their application was successful.

Ideas included having a chill out area with TV, Juke Box and pool table, an exercise room to run various dance lessons, DJ-ing and mixing sessions and a kitchen to learn about healthy eating.

The name (The Mix) was chosen, and bright colours to represent the centre.

The fantastic news is that these ideas have now become a reality as work has started to build this facility.

What else will the Mix provide?

The Mix will also offer support, guidance, information and advice, and a range of leisure and recreational activities.

It will also include an 8-bed emergency support unit for ages 16 -19 who have issues with homelessness.

This facility will be staffed 24/7, and provide up to 28 days accommodation so that work can be done with housing support staff and other support services based at the project to make decisions about their housing needs and future plans.
