Public Transport

We've produced some great info on travel and transport for you to read:

Travel and Transport Leaflet 2009

What is public transport?

You may already be using public transport to get to school or work. Public transport includes buses, community transport, rail, express coaches and estuarial ferries. Remember that cycling, walking and using public transport is kinder to the environment, and may be cheaper and quicker, than using a car.

Plan your journey

If you want to plan your journey on public transport you can telephone the Traveline on 0870 608 2 608. Open every day from 8am to 8pm, the Traveline will give you the start and finish times of journeys and also those of connecting services. You may prefer to visit the website to view timetables at www.traveline.org.uk

Timetable books are available free-of-charge from bus stations, libraries, tourist information centres and other stockists or via direct mail. There are seven area books in total covering the whole of Suffolk so that you have details of all the services in your area, e.g. Ipswich, Suffolk Coastal, West Suffolk, or get all seven if you travel throughout Suffolk!

Community schemes

Community schemes are provided if you are unable to travel by conventional public transport through location or mobility impairment. Many of the vehicles are fully accessible and equipped to carry wheelchairs. The website www.a2binfo.net will tell you what community transport is available in your town or village.

Examples of the services offered are shown below:

  • Club 88 operates in mid-Suffolk and also connects on a regular basis in Needham Market with Superoute 88 for onward travel to Ipswich and Stowmarket. Use this service to, for example, visit a friend in a nearby village or travel to Needham Market.
  • Buzabout serves the Shotley peninsula. You can book a community car from/to anywhere in the Shotley peninsula if you can’t use conventional transport because buses don’t go where you need to go or through a mobility impairment. Maybe you don’t live near a bus route? You could book the car to take you for example to Manningtree rail station for onward travel to London – and all for the cost of a bus fare!
  • Harwich harbour foot ferry - Why not catch the Harwich harbour foot ferry from Felixstowe to Harwich or Shotley – or go to all three destinations! The services run daily until September.
  • Driving the Community - Driving the community is a campaign to encourage volunteers to help those unable to travel by conventional public transport, through location or mobility impairment, to get out and about.
