Education 'n' Work

Student life

You've studied for years and have now have left school ... you're about to become a student. Whether this is at a local college or away at university, the experience will be very different from secondary education.

If becoming a student is going to be a positive experience, you will need to do some serious research.

What to study and where?

You will have the chance to study to something that you are really interested in, but it’s important that the course you decide on is right for you.

Not only is your choice of subject important but how it’s taught will make a difference. For example, are you happy doing lots of reading, research and writing essays or are you more practical, prefer working in a team and having project based assignments?

Where are you going study? If you are moving away from home, is there accommodation on the campus or will you have to find somewhere yourself?

The facilities at the university/college are important, but so is the type of accommodation available, as well as living costs and let's not forget the nightlife in the area.

Money matters are a big concern for all students, so it is important that you have a understanding of funding and student loans. Don’t forget to discuss this with your parents/carers or whomever you hope will be helping you with this.

There is a lot of information and advice available to help you!

Don’t forget to talk about your worries with your parents/carers, tutors at school, and your Connexions Personal Adviser (PA).
