Fancy a Challenge? - Great East Swim

Posted by on 3 January 2019

The Great East Swim is a mass participation event that takes place annually at Alton Water Park, near Ipswich.  Participants swim distances of between ½ mile and 10 kilometres.  Suffolk County Council, in partnership with Suffolk Sport, is again funding two outreach programmes to support 96 adults to take part in the Great East Swim on 22nd June 2019.   This year the programmes will be centred in Haverhill and Ipswich.

The outreach programme is targeted at those over the age of 18 who are currently not very active (doing less than 0 - 1 x 30 minute’s physical activity per week).  The programme aims to create long term behaviour change and support those taking part to become more active for life.  The programme includes:

  • regular training sessions with qualified swimming teachers for three months to build fitness and develop swimming techniques for open water,
  • free swimming passes for the duration of the programme,
  • free wetsuit hire,
  • entry to the Great East Swim on 22nd June 2019,
  • fast track physiotherapy and optional strength and conditioning sessions with Allied Health Professionals,
  • plenty of moral support.

The programme package is worth over £200 per person!!  Participants will be asked to contribute £30 towards this cost.

Prospective participants must be able to swim 50 metres at the start of the programme.  They can register using this link: .
