The Boy Who Skated Away From Everything

Posted by on 28 March 2018

The Boy Who Skated Away From Everything is a short story written by a young person in Suffolk with support of staff at a children`s home for the BBC Radio 2 '500 Words' competition. The story is about going into care, being in care and the changes that happened in that time. He was inspired by a book he had read and he felt ready to write this to help other children and young people in his position.

You can view the poem or read more about going into care, being in care or leaving care.

Would you like to give it a go to write 500 words? Here's the idea behind it:

Seven years ago, Chris Evans had a dream: to get children excited about reading and writing. All children, no matter what their ability. 500 Words is now one of the most successful story-writing competitions for kids in the world: Three quarters of a million children have written a story for us over the years!
